In fond memory of the founder of the MaD Jazzers who departed this life in June 2024, the group has been renamed ‘The Bryan Ruskin MaD Jazzers’. Bryan would have been so very proud to know that the group he loved so much now bears his name.

Jazz trombone was the theme for March and we listened to some great trombone music.

Below is the playlist – click on the links to listen.

My Reverie – Melba Liston with the Quincy Jones band

Blue Monk by J J Johnson and Kai Winding

Sweet Louisiana by Wycliffe Gordon (1st track)

Jazz Baltica 2021 (1st track) by Ebba Åsman Quartet

It’s Alright With Me by J J Johnson and Kai Winding

Basic Street Blues by Jack Teagarden

We then listened to a couple of ‘bonus tracks’ ….

the first was Breaking the Gender Barrier, a little piece of jazz history about the difficulties of gender and colour in music in the early twentieth century

and we finished with a lovely tongue-in-cheek track – Big Long Slidin’ Thing by Dinah Washington

In April our theme is The Male voice in jazz …. but in memory of Bryan and in and deference to his feelings, we shall be avoiding Jamie Cullum 🤣.

Our ‘MaD Jazzer’ Andrew Harper has put together a Spotify playlist of the tracks we’ve listened to in our jazz group meetings. You can click on the link to go to Spotify and enjoy a hugely varied selection of great jazz … MaD Jazzers Playlist

The MaD Jazzers meet via Zoom on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00pm.  This format works well as we can share our music choices online. We also occasionally visit Peggy’s Skylight, an award-winning jazz club in Nottingham.

Would you like to join us?  We’d be delighted to have you!   Please contact the Convener via the email link above.
