In order to research the occult for his next book, successful novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth have invited the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to a dinner party.

All is going well, until the sudden and unexpected arrival of Charles' first wife, the incredibly attractive, and very much deceased, Elvira.

While only Charles can see her, Elvira makes ever more desperate attempts to break up his marriage to Ruth, even if it means bringing Charles to the other side.

This witty comedy became the longest running non-musical in London's West End, running for 1,997 performances from 1941-1946, a record that would only be broken in 1957 the Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap.
